Ayurveda, a Perfect Health curriculum of the Chopra Center
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old healing system founded in ancient India, is derived from the Sanskrit words ayus (life), and veda (wisdom).
Ayurveda, the wisdom of life, offers a guide for a life of happiness, vitality, love and purpose. From the Ayurvedic perspective, human beings are not viewed as mere thinking physical machines, but rather, as fields of intelligence in dynamic exchange with the energy and information of the environment.
As health is a state of vibrant balance in which all the layers of one’s life are integrated, the wisdom of Ayurveda provides the tools to enhance physical and emotional well being through conscious choices. Enlivening the essential connection between mind, body and spirit, is the goal of Ayurveda, and the natural tools of this system are terrifically nourishing.
What is the Perfect Health program?
Based on the global best seller Perfect Health by Deepak Chopra, M.D., the Chopra Center's Ayurvedic Lifestyle Program teaches participants to easily bring balance and healing into daily routine. Students learn a grounding regimen of Ayurvedic practices designed to balance the body and mind, enhance nutrition, reduce emotional turbulence, and re-awaken the senses (the specifics are listed below in What Will Participants Learn in the Perfect Health Program).
In some form or another we all seek "perfect health". Physically and emotionally we want healthier relationships, inner peace, career satisfaction, a body that feels great and moves with ease. Late Chopra Center co-founder and medical director, David Simon, M.D., designed a beautiful five lesson course for achieving equilibrium of the mind and the body. When our bodies and minds are in balance, we can make nourishing choices, achieve the healing we strive toward, and experience the change we seek.
How will the Perfect Health course affect my life?
Today, doctors cite stress as a major contributing factor to most illnesses. Our bodies and minds react to stress by shifting out of balance, which ultimately creates physical challenge and emotional turbulence that impact our lives in every way. In time, we can find ourselves in toxic relationships and non-nourishing patterns of eating, sleeping, and digestion. The Perfect Health course helps participants identify their life imbalances, and offers a practical, daily, more nurturing daily routine.
What Will Participants Learn in the Perfect Health program?
The Perfect Health course is presented in 5 sessions over several days or weeks:
In Session One, Participants are introduced to the basic principles of Ayurveda, Meditation, and Yoga as well as the three primary mind-body personalities known as doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha.
In Session Two, Participants learn how to select and use the most nourishing foods for their mind-body personality. These nutritional practices help maintain vibrant health and optimized digestion.
In Session Three, Participants learn to perpetually renew each day by recognizing and eliminating toxins and by performing a doshic specific rejuvenating massage known as abhyanga (those with kapha dosha would use more vigorous technique, etc.).
In Session Four, Participants learn Marshall Rosenberg's Conscious Communication tools to enhance healthy relationships and help achieve emotional freedom.
In Session Five, Participants learn how to use and rely on their senses to access the power of their body’s inner pharmacy to heal, nourish, and maintain balance.
What are the benefits of Perfect Health?
By practicing the techniques learned in the Perfect Health course, participants will be able to:
• Reduce stress
• Identify the dosha (mind-body personality) they were born with, and make conscious choices based on those health needs
• Improve digestion and sleep patterns
• Release emotional toxicity
• Create better daily nutrition and lower blood pressure
